5 Questions You Won’t Be Able To Answer

Thought Catalog

Is it possible to know anything is Absolutely True?

In “hard fields” like science, we assume that we are dealing with hard truths because they are tested and learned through the scientific method.

We can verify that something is true by using the scientific method, but we cannot apply that same question to the scientific method itself. If we could verify the truth of the scientific method with something else, we would have to yet another set presuppositions to question. Our argument would regress infinitely, rely on circular reasoning, or rest on unproved assumptions. This is called the Münchhausen trilemma.

Do we all see the same colors?

We know the color of the sky is blue. But what if what you perceive as “blue” is actually what your best friend sees as “red.” All we can communicate to each to other is that there is a “blue” and…

32 People Reveal The One Book That Blew Their Minds

Thought Catalog

There are probably a handful of books out there that have changed the way you see everything — fiction and non-fiction. Some of them you read in high school or earlier, and others you discovered or rediscovered in your adult life. I went to AskReddit to learn what books have changed people’s lives. Consider this your Spring reading list.

1. One full of intellectual surprises

Thinking Fast and slow by Daniel Kahneman

2. Being intelligent is so hard

Flowers for Algernon absolutely hit me hard.

It really made me think about intelligence and knowledge as a blessing and a curse. The whole “ignorance is bliss” versus “once you see, you cannot un-see” concept really made me think about knowledge in a whole new light.

Also, it completely twisted my brain with the internal debate of whether romance is based more on personality match or intelligence match.

5 Poems That’ll Make You Fall in Love With Poetry

Thought Catalog

I started to write poetry when I was 6-years-old. Back then, I thought it was a requirement to that poetry had to rhyme. And so I wrote about staring contests I had with lizards crawling up the marble blocks of my bath tub or about a blonde haired princess, who refused to take off her glittery tutu when it was time to go to bed.
When I grew up, I was surprised to learn that poetry has no rules. You can do what you want, if you please. Break lines in the same harsh, cruel way your heart was once broken. Throw out any and all punctuation because your thoughts are just one jumbled, chaotically gorgeous run on sentence disastrous mess. It doesn’t matter, my friends, unless you agree to tell a story with every ounce of courage that you have.
Here are a few of my favorites:

The Happiness To-Do List

Thought Catalog

1. Hug more people because you absolutely adore them, and since time changes everything, make sure to hug them now—make sure to hug them more often. It’s a universally free way to tell them that you care. That you’re sorry; that your heart aches and craves and desires them. Hug them because it’s Wednesday. Because you don’t want to say goodbye. Because after three months of silence, you finally have the courage to forgive them. Hug them for no reason at all.

2. Talk to strangers: when you’re out at a bar and a guy wearing a checkered button down shirt approaches you with a splash of confidence, give him the time of day. Talk to him, and the stranger on the park bench eating a raisin bagel. Talk to the women with the bedazzled nails ringing up your produce at the grocery store. The guy devouring some Vonnegut at…
